Battlefield Forge, Land, designed by Darrell Riche first released in Jun, 2001 in the set Apocalypse and was printed exactly in 23 different ways. It see play in 2 formats: Commander and Brawl.
A deck that requires both red and white mana would benefit from using Battlefield Forge, as it provides flexibility in mana production. However, decks that are sensitive to life loss may want to consider alternatives such as Sacred Foundry or Clifftop Retreat, which provide dual lands without the drawback of dealing damage to the player. Battlefield Forge could still see play in aggressive decks that prioritize speed and flexibility over life total preservation.

The damage dealt to you is part of the second mana ability. It doesn’t use the stack and can’t be responded to.
