Edit reference

Link is the recurring protagonist of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series, although he is not usually the same individual from one game to the next. The character first appeared in the 1986 game The Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo Entertainment System. In that adventure, the player guides him through Hyrule to recover the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom, rescue Princess Zelda, and defeat the demon king Ganon. Link is generally recognizable by his green clothing, pointed cap, sword, shield, and mostly silent personality, but his age, background, abilities, and relationship with Zelda change across the series.

In A Link to the Past, released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, Link responds to a telepathic message from Princess Zelda and discovers the Dark World, an alternate version of Hyrule created after the wizard Agahnim opens a gateway to the Sacred Realm. He ultimately defeats Ganon and restores the balance between the two worlds. In Ocarina of Time, Link begins as a child in Kokiri Forest, learns that he is a Hylian, and travels through time after drawing the Master Sword. Seven years later, he awakens as the Hero of Time and confronts Ganondorf, whose transformation into Ganon follows his seizure of the Triforce of Power.

The Link in The Wind Waker has a different role and appearance. He lives on Outset Island and wears the traditional green hero’s clothes only after setting out to rescue his kidnapped sister, Aryll. Sailing across the Great Sea, he obtains the Master Sword, confronts Ganondorf, and helps establish a new future after the flooded kingdom of Hyrule is submerged permanently. In Twilight Princess, Link is a ranch hand from Ordon Village who is drawn into the Twilight Realm and becomes a wolf when exposed to its influence. With Midna’s help, he defeats Zant and Ganondorf.

Breath of the Wild presents Link as a knight who awakens after a century in the Shrine of Resurrection with no memory of the Great Calamity. He must recover memories, release the Divine Beasts, and confront Calamity Ganon in a Hyrule transformed by disaster. Tears of the Kingdom continues this version’s story: Link explores the Depths and sky islands, loses the Master Sword temporarily, and battles the revived Demon King Ganondorf. Across these incarnations, Link’s defining role is not a fixed biography but the repeated task of answering Hyrule’s crisis through courage, exploration, and action.
