The new Street Fighter movie has hit theaters as the clear favorite to top the box office during its opening weekend. Projections indicate that the Paramount Pictures production will bring in around US$ 70 million worldwide in its first few days.

In the United States and Canada, the film is expected to earn between US$ 30 million and US$ 35 million over its opening weekend. The international market is projected to deliver a similar debut, putting the fighting-game adaptation in contention for the global box-office lead.

Before its official release in the United States, the movie had already earned approximately US$ 4 million from preview screenings in North America on Thursday (15). Paramount and Legendary Pictures, which shared the production costs estimated at US$ 82 million, will be watching the early performance closely.

The new live-action adaptation also marks the return of familiar Capcom characters to the big screen. Based on 49 published reviews, Street Fighter has a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have described the film as wild, nostalgic and colorful, while noting that its chaotic tone and shallow script could disappoint viewers expecting a more serious take on the games.

The film is now playing in theaters nationwide. In the story, Ryu and Ken Masters return to the fight when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. The competition conceals a deadly conspiracy that forces the fighters to confront conflicts from their past.

Twisted Metal director Kitao Sakurai helms the film. The cast includes Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Jason Momoa as Blanka and David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, among others.

With more than 55 million units sold worldwide, Street Fighter ranks among the most lucrative video game franchises.
