Sara Gilbert, known for her work on Roseanne and The Conners, has been cast in a major role in The People v. Gorilla Grodd, a Superman spin-off series set within the DCU. Gilbert will play an “important journalist,” although no other details about the character have been revealed.Created by Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the duo behind the satire American Vandal, the series will be directed by Yacenda, who is set to helm every episode. The pair are also writing and executive producing the show alongside James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs of DC Studios.The cast includes Skyler Gisondo and actors returning to the roles they introduced in Superman at the Daily Planet: Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz round out the announced cast.The series was conceived after James Gunn and Peter Safran noticed the chemistry among the Daily Planet actors while filming the movie. The story follows Jimmy as he investigates Metropolis’ criminal justice system, exploring a funnier and quirkier side of the DCU.Yacenda and Perrault also want the project to feel less like a conventional superhero series and more like an “artifact” that exists within that universe. The idea is to present it as a real documentary made by the Daily Planet for the citizens of Metropolis.Amy Gravitt, HBO and HBO Max’s executive vice president of comedy programming, praised the partnership and highlighted the creators’ work, as well as the performances of Gisondo and Tatro leading the cast.
