Prime Video plans to develop soap operas produced in Brazil. The information was confirmed by Javiera Balmaceda, head of International Originals for Latin America, Canada and Australia at Amazon MGM Studios, and Tomás Tejero, the company's regional lead for Latin America and Canada. The platform's possible move into the format would expand the company's strategy of producing content locally. Soap operas have long held a central place in Brazil's audiovisual industry and are also known for their ability to reach audiences in other countries.During the conversation, the executives indicated that Amazon MGM Studios is interested in exploring the genre and revealed that plans are already in place to create Brazilian soap operas. The first projects have not yet been announced, nor has a timeline been set for filming to begin. The move follows Amazon's announcement of an investment of more than US$ 2 billion in Latin America between 2027 and 2030. The amount includes original productions, licensed local content and sports rights. The company also plans to more than double the number of Local Originals produced in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Chile. For 2027, Prime Video is preparing more than 25 Latin American titles, including films, scripted series, documentaries, reality shows and other formats. In Brazil, the lineup includes the second season of Tremembé, Quem Matou PC Farias?, Tiros no Escuro and productions about Marília Mendonça and Maiara & Maraisa.Javiera Balmaceda said one of Amazon MGM Studios' priorities is to find stories deeply connected to the countries where they originate while still having international appeal. The executive described this pursuit as a search for stories that are “undeniably local” yet capable of becoming “undeniably universal.”A soap opera could also set Prime Video's offering apart from traditional series, with extended narratives, large casts and a daily viewing experience for audiences. The platform has not yet revealed which stories will be developed or when production on the Brazilian soap operas will begin.
