Netflix has given a straight-to-series order to a new adaptation of Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry's 1985 novel. Teton Ridge Entertainment, which holds the rights to the book and its sequels, will produce, with Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart serving as showrunners. The pair recently completed work on the limited series East of Eden, also produced by Netflix and based on a novel, this time by John Steinbeck. Kazan and Stuart said they are taking on the project with love and respect for the source material and are excited to bring Gus, Call and the other characters back to television.Set in 19th-century Texas, the story follows Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, former Texas Rangers. The two rediscover their adventurous spirit as they face an uncertain future and set out on one final, perilous cattle drive from the Rio Grande to the Montana wilderness. The story brings together an array of characters on a journey across the American West, shaped by unrequited love, friendship, brutal frontier justice and the search for a meaningful life. The new production adapts the novel that previously inspired a 1989 CBS miniseries starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, which won an Emmy.Netflix described Lonesome Dove as one of the great American stories. The company said Kazan and Stuart's work on East of Eden demonstrated their ability to handle the character depth, scope of the settings and emotional precision the material requires.Teton Ridge Entertainment acquired the rights to McMurtry's four novels in the series last year. In addition to Lonesome Dove, the collection includes Streets of Laredo, Dead Man’s Walk and Comanche Moon, with plans to adapt all four works. Zoe Kazan, Jeb Stuart, Thomas Tull, Jillian Share, Jen Gorton, Jon Jashni, Diana Ossana and Curtis McMurtry are among the executive producers.
