Kid Cudi will play Jean-Michel Basquiat in the biopic JEAN. The rapper also wrote the screenplay and will direct the film, which is expected to begin production in 2027.

Cudi announced the project on social media, sharing images from a costume test in which he appears as the painter, wearing a wig inspired by Basquiat’s hairstyle. The musician said the look is preliminary and will undergo further changes.

Cudi said the idea of playing Basquiat came after years of fans asking him to portray the artist. To write JEAN, he spent the summer researching, reading and speaking with people who knew the painter. In his post, he described the project as a love letter to Basquiat, 1980s New York and the era that shaped his life.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Basquiat gained prominence in the late 1970s with graffiti signed SAMO. In the following decade, he became one of the most recognized figures in contemporary art. His paintings combined words and symbols with references to identity, racism and power. He died in 1988 at age 27.

Basquiat’s life has been portrayed on screen before. Jeffrey Wright played him in Basquiat, the 1996 film directed by Julian Schnabel. Another project is also in development: Samo Lives, with Kelvin Harrison Jr. set to play the painter. No release date has been announced for JEAN.
