Jesse Eisenberg said winning a Razzie for his performance as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hurt his Hollywood career. Speaking at the London Film Festival, the actor said he struggled to land roles in major studio films after receiving the award.

“I couldn’t get roles in studio movies anymore because I had won a Razzie for the Batman movie,” Eisenberg said.

Eisenberg won worst supporting actor in 2017 for his performance in Zack Snyder’s 2016 film. Henry Cavill plays Superman, while Ben Affleck plays Batman. The film also won worst screenplay, worst prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel, and worst screen combo, the last of those for Affleck and Cavill’s characters.

Although the Razzies are satirical, Eisenberg took the result seriously. To him, the award signaled that the industry did not want to see him in superhero films. “The industry tells you what it wants from you. The industry didn’t want me in a superhero movie, and if you’re smart and self-aware, you learn that quickly,” he said.

His fear of losing opportunities also influenced his decision to work behind the camera. “I thought: I need to direct movies. That’s why I started writing them, basically to keep my career afloat,” he explained.

Eisenberg wrote, directed and produced his next film, The Debut, in which he also co-stars. It follows a shy woman unexpectedly cast in a local musical who becomes involved with the show’s director. The cast includes Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey and Bernadette Peters. The film is scheduled for release in Brazilian cinemas in January 2027.
