Harry Styles performed the unreleased song What Is Enough? for the first time at Madison Square Garden in New York on Friday (16). The performance came on the second anniversary of the death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, for whom Styles wrote the song.

Before singing, Styles spoke to the audience about the people who had been part of his journey.

“There are so many people in my life, friends and people I’ve worked with, without whom I couldn’t have done any of this. And two years ago, I lost one of those friends”

- Harry Styles

Styles said he had written the song for Liam and asked the audience if he could play it for them. Afterward, he urged fans to look after one another. He also asked them to get home safely and tell the people they love how much they mean to them.

The tribute took place during Styles’ Madison Square Garden residency, part of the Together, Together tour. What Is Enough? remains unreleased, with no official release date announced.

Liam Payne died on October 16, 2024, at age 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and Styles were members of One Direction and shared part of their musical careers from the group’s formation in 2010.

Styles had spoken publicly about his friend before. In a March interview with Zane Lowe, he discussed grief and said he believed living life to the fullest was the best way to honor friends who had died. He also mentioned Liam when speaking about his former bandmates at the end of his run of shows at Wembley Stadium in London.
