Digger, Tom Cruise’s new film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is expected to gross around US$ 8 million over its opening weekend in North America. The film is playing in 3,300 theaters and took in US$ 3.3 million on Friday, including preview screenings.

The projection falls short of Warner Bros.’ earlier estimate of US$ 12 million to US$ 15 million. With a production budget of US$ 125 million, the result could mark Tom Cruise’s weakest opening since Lions for Lambs, a 2007 war drama that debuted with US$ 6.7 million but had a much smaller budget.

The film’s performance has also been affected by its audience reception. Digger received a C+ CinemaScore, one of the lowest ratings of the actor’s career and the same grade earned by Lions for Lambs. Cruise plays a bald, overweight oil tycoon whose life story is tied to the cause of a natural disaster. Riz Ahmed, John Goodman and Sandra Hüller also star.

Critics have been divided, with Digger earning a 51% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Warner Bros. still hopes awards buzz will help the film maintain its audience over the coming weeks.

The release marks Warner Bros.’ final opening as an independent studio. The US$ 111 billion merger between the company and Paramount Skydance is expected to be completed on October 6. Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy will leave the studio’s leadership, which will be taken over by Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.

While Digger struggles, Verity leads the weekend. The adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s book, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, is expected to gross US$ 33.6 million at 3,510 locations. Resident Evil ranks second, with a projected US$ 12 million in its third weekend, while Heart of the Beast is expected to bring in around US$ 11 million in its second week.
