Bradley Cooper will star in the new live-action adaptation of G.I. Joe, currently in development at Paramount Pictures. The actor will play Duke, the leader of the military team that became known worldwide for its battles against the terrorist organization Cobra.

Danny McBride, creator of the series The Righteous Gemstones, will direct the project. He will also co-write the screenplay with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri. The production is being treated as a top priority at the studio, which has accelerated development of its key intellectual properties under the leadership of its new owner, David Ellison.

The new version also marks a change in the actor playing Duke on the big screen. Channing Tatum portrayed the character in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, released in 2009, and its 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

The franchise originally emerged in the 1960s as a line of realistic military action figures. In the 1980s, the animated series G.I. Joe expanded the brand's reach and popularized the elite team led by characters such as Duke, Roadblock and Snake Eyes.

The film is being developed during a period of renewed focus on established properties at Paramount. In addition to G.I. Joe, the studio is also moving forward with projects tied to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek. No details have yet been announced about the new production's official title, full cast or release date.
