Netflix and SEGA have announced a deal to turn the Japanese video game company’s famous franchises into films and series. The first projects revealed are a live-action Crazy Taxi movie and a new Sonic animated series.

Originally released in arcades in 1999, Crazy Taxi puts players behind the wheel of taxi drivers racing across the city to get passengers to their destinations before time runs out. The gameplay lets players drive into oncoming traffic, jump off ramps, take shortcuts and wreak havoc on the streets.

The adaptation aims to bring the game’s speed, humor, urban chaos and punk-rock aesthetic to Netflix. The film is being described as an irreverent action comedy, with Toru Nakahara promising a completely wild production that stays true to the spirit of the games.

Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who wrote the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun, have been hired to pen the film. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara, producers involved in the Sonic film franchise, will also oversee the project.

The film is being announced as SEGA prepares Crazy Taxi: World Tour, the latest game in the series, which is due out in 2027. The company is therefore working on a new chapter for the brand, which gained particular momentum after its arrival on the Dreamcast.

The deal also includes a Sonic animated series separate from Sonic Prime. Developed by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, the show will feature Sonic and his friends as heroes and will be aimed primarily at older preschool children.

Netflix describes the series as a comedic, emotional and high-voltage adventure. The story will also explore the friendship between Sonic and his companions, focusing on teamwork and a sense of belonging. Details about the characters who will appear in the animation have not yet been revealed.
