RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality competition series in which drag performers compete in challenges for the title of America's Next Drag Superstar. RuPaul hosts and judges the show.

*RuPaul’s Drag Race* premiered on Logo on February 2, 2009, with RuPaul serving as host, mentor and head judge. The first season crowned BeBe Zahara Benet. After eight seasons on Logo, the American competition moved to VH1 for season nine in 2017, then to MTV for season fifteen in 2023.

Each season brings drag performers into a workroom to compete in challenges involving costume construction, acting, comedy, dancing and performance. Contestants also present themed looks on the runway. At the end of most episodes, two contestants face a “lip sync for your life,” after which RuPaul typically sends one home with the words “sashay away.” The finale format has changed over the years: season nine introduced a tournament of lip syncs for the crown.

Several recurring challenges have become closely associated with the show. *Snatch Game*, introduced in season two, asks contestants to impersonate celebrities in a parody of the game show *Match Game*. The series has also staged “Rusicals,” makeover challenges and design challenges that require contestants to turn unconventional materials into runway outfits. Michelle Visage joined the judging panel in season three; Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews became regular judges in season seven.

The show’s winners illustrate its range of drag styles. Raja won season three after becoming known for fashion-focused runway looks. Jinkx Monsoon won season five, Bianca Del Rio won season six, and Bob the Drag Queen won season eight. At the season nine finale, Sasha Velour delivered a widely remembered lip sync to Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional,” revealing rose petals beneath her wig before winning the crown. Later winners include Jaida Essence Hall in season twelve, Symone in season thirteen, Willow Pill in season fourteen and Sasha Colby in season fifteen.

The franchise expanded with *RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars*, which began in 2012 and brings back previous contestants. Its first winner was Chad Michaels. The seventh *All Stars* season, aired in 2022, assembled former winners and ended with Jinkx Monsoon receiving the title “Queen of All Queens.” *Untucked*, a companion series, follows contestants’ conversations backstage while judges deliberate.

*Drag Race* has also produced international editions, including *RuPaul’s Drag Race UK*, which premiered in 2019, and *Drag Race España*, which premiered in 2021. Its television recognition includes the 2018 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program. That award marked a milestone for a series that began on Logo with a small cast, a workroom and RuPaul’s search for “America’s Next Drag Superstar.”
