Nicole Kidman

Nicole Mary Kidman was born in Honolulu on June 20, 1967, while her Australian parents were temporarily working in Hawaii. She grew up in Sydney, studied ballet and drama, and began performing on Australian television during her adolescence before recognition. Her breakthrough film role came in Dead Calm (1989), a thriller in which she played Rae Ingram opposite Sam Neill. In 1990, she married Tom Cruise, and they later appeared together in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999) as co-stars. She portrayed Alice Harford in that film, whose production lasted several years and became Kubrick's final completed feature, released posthumously.

Her collaboration with director Baz Luhrmann produced Moulin Rouge! (2001), where she played Satine, courtesan and singer opposite Ewan McGregor. The performance earned her first Academy Award nomination, while the film's stylized musical approach made it a major popular success.
