Quentin Tarantino’s *The Hateful Eight* is a 2015 Western set in Wyoming several years after the Civil War. Its story centers on a blizzard-bound stagecoach journey and a remote mountain haberdashery called Minnie’s, where strangers shelter from the storm. The travelers include bounty hunter John Ruth, who is transporting the captured outlaw Daisy Domergue to Red Rock; fellow bounty hunter Major Marquis Warren; and Chris Mannix, who claims he is the town’s new sheriff. At Minnie’s, they encounter four more men. As the storm isolates the group, conflicting accounts, concealed identities, and shifting alliances turn the shelter into a tense, violent standoff.
The principal cast includes Kurt Russell as Ruth, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Daisy, Samuel L. Jackson as Warren, and Walton Goggins as Mannix. The other men at Minnie’s are played by Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, and Demián Bichir. Tarantino’s script makes the gathering place central to the film: rather than moving rapidly between locations, it keeps much of the action inside one room and lets suspicion accumulate through dialogue and competing versions of events. The film’s extended runtime and chapter structure reflect that deliberate, enclosed design.
The project began as a novel-length story Tarantino considered adapting for the screen. After the screenplay leaked online in 2014, he announced a live reading of it in Los Angeles, then later decided to proceed with the film. The production was photographed in 65 mm, using Panavision equipment and lenses associated with the Ultra Panavision 70 format. That widescreen process was rarely used in modern filmmaking; the release included a special roadshow version presented in 70 mm, with an overture and intermission. The choice gives the snowbound landscape outside Minnie’s a striking breadth, while the interiors use the wide frame to hold several characters in view.
Ennio Morricone composed the score, his first original score for a Tarantino film. It earned Morricone the Academy Award for Best Original Score, his first competitive Oscar in that category. The film also received Oscar nominations for Leigh’s supporting performance and Robert Richardson’s cinematography. *The Hateful Eight* followed Tarantino’s *Django Unchained*, another Western, but takes a markedly more confined approach: its main dramatic engine is not a journey across the frontier but a question of who can be trusted inside a single, increasingly dangerous room.
