About Moan of the Unhallowed

Moan of the Unhallowed, Sorcery, designed by Nils Hamm first released in Sep, 2011 in the set Innistrad and was printed exactly in 6 different ways.

A deck that focuses on graveyard recursion and token generation, such as a Black-White Zombie deck or a Golgari graveyard deck, would benefit from including Moan of the Unhallowed. While it provides decent value by creating two 2/2 black Zombie tokens for 4 mana, its flashback cost of 8 mana may be a bit too high for more competitive decks. Cards like Lingering Souls or Endless Ranks of the Dead may offer better value in terms of token generation, but Moan of the Unhallowed could still see play in more casual or themed decks.

Rules

03/19/21

To determine the total cost of a spell, start with the mana cost or alternative cost (such as a flashback cost) you’re paying, add any cost increases, then apply any cost reductions. The converted mana cost of the spell is determined only by its mana cost, no matter what the total cost to cast the spell was.

03/19/21

You can cast a spell using flashback even if it was somehow put into your graveyard without having been cast.

03/19/21

“Flashback [cost]” means “You may cast this card from your graveyard by paying [cost] rather than paying its mana cost” and “If the flashback cost was paid, exile this card instead of putting it anywhere else any time it would leave the stack.”
