About Gallowbraid

Gallowbraid, Legendary creature — phyrexian horror, designed by Carl Critchlow first released in Jun, 1997 in the set Weatherlight.

Gallowbraid would fit well in a black-based aggressive or midrange deck that can leverage its trample ability and life payment mechanic, potentially alongside cards that benefit from life loss, such as those that trigger on gaining life or dealing damage when life is paid. While Gallowbraid can be powerful, there are arguably better options like Grave Titan or Tireless Tracker that provide more immediate board presence or value without the cumulative upkeep drawback. However, if your deck is built to sustain life payments and capitalize on the trample effect, Gallowbraid can still see play, particularly in a casual or thematic setting.

Rules

10/01/08

Paying cumulative upkeep is always optional. If it’s not paid, the permanent with cumulative upkeep is sacrificed. Partial payments of the total cumulative upkeep cost can’t be made. For example, if a permanent with “cumulative upkeep ” has three age counters on it when its cumulative upkeep ability triggers, it gets another age counter and then its controller chooses to either pay or sacrifice the permanent.
