About Briar Shield

Briar Shield, Enchantment — aura, designed by Scott Kirschner first released in Jun, 1997 in the set Weatherlight.

This Briar Shield card would be beneficial in a deck that focuses on buffing and protecting key creatures, such as a green aggro deck or a creature-based strategy. While it provides a decent boost in power and toughness for a low cost, there are potentially better options like Rancor which offers a similar power boost but also provides trample and returns to your hand if the enchanted creature dies. Whether Briar Shield should see play would depend on the specific strategy and synergy of the deck, as well as the overall card pool available.

Rules

04/01/08

When you cast Briar Shield’s activated ability, Briar Shield is put into the graveyard as a cost. The +1/+1 effect immediately ends, but the +3/+3 effect won’t begin until the ability resolves. The enchanted creature gets no bonus while Briar Shield’s ability is on the stack. If its toughness is 0 during this time, it’ll be put into the graveyard.
