Ryan Gosling is developing a new live-action The Flintstones film for Warner Bros., centered on an adult Bam-Bam Rubble. The son of Barney and Betty will take center stage instead of Fred Flintstone and his family.

Gosling will also produce the feature alongside Jessie Henderson, his partner at production company Open Invite. The project is still in its early stages and is looking for a screenwriter.

So far, the production has no director, cast or release date. It has also not been announced whether Ryan Gosling will appear in the film as an actor.

The idea of depicting an older Bam-Bam had already appeared in “The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show,” an animated series originally broadcast between 1971 and 1972. In the series, Bam-Bam and Pebbles were teenagers, attended Bedrock High School and were romantically involved.

The animated series also followed the character through milestones such as looking for his first job and forming the Bedrock Rockers with Pebbles. The new feature aims to move the timeline forward and introduce Bam-Bam as an adult.

The franchise received its first live-action big-screen adaptation in 1994. John Goodman played Fred Flintstone, Rick Moranis portrayed Barney, Elizabeth Perkins took on the role of Wilma and Rosie O’Donnell played Betty.

Its success led to the prequel “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas,” released in 2000 with a different cast. Mark Addy played Fred, Stephen Baldwin portrayed Barney, Kristen Johnston was Wilma and Jane Krakowski took on the role of Betty. The film depicted events before the 1994 story, including the beginning of both couples’ relationships.
