Practical Magic 2 grossed $46 million worldwide in its opening weekend, falling short of recent opening projections of between $58 million and $63 million.In the United States, the sequel earned $30 million. It had been expected to debut with $40 million domestically. The result also fell below the original film’s performance in 1998, when Practical Magic opened to $46.7 million in North America.Outside the US, the film brought in $16 million across 77 markets. The UK led the international box office with $3.9 million, followed by Australia with $2.2 million and Mexico with $1.2 million. Germany and Spain rounded out the top five markets, with $770,000 and $651,000, respectively.Critical reception has also been mixed, with the film holding a 39% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a B+, above the B- average received by the original film.The sequel adapts The Book of Magic, the second novel in Alice Hoffman’s series. Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the 1998 classic, returns to pen the sequel.Producer Denise Di Novi said the production aims to remain faithful to the book and its characters, acknowledging the importance of the first film to audiences. Practical Magic 2 is now playing in Brazilian theaters.
