Godzilla Minus Zero has unveiled its first trailer with English subtitles, and the preview opens with a grim warning: “We didn't finish the job the way we thought we did.” The sequel to 2023's Godzilla Minus One is set two years after the events of the film, which was directed by Takashi Yamazaki. The story returns to Japan in 1949, as humanity struggles to preserve a hard-won peace. That balance collapses when a new threat emerges and destroys hope in an instant. The film's own marketing sums up the conflict with a definitive statement: there won't be a third time, and it all ends here.Ryunosuke Kamiki reprises his role as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot tasked with confronting Godzilla in the previous film. The trailer revisits the monster's apparent destruction while also bringing back an unresolved detail: a small part of the creature was seen regenerating as it sank into the ocean.Minami Hamabe also returns as Noriko, now Shikishima's wife. Yuki Yamada, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Miou Tanaka round out the returning cast. Masami Nagasawa joins the production as Ms. Aoyama, described as a prodigy at making predictions who suggests a Plan B.Godzilla Minus One won the 2024 Oscar for visual effects and grossed US$ 113.9 million worldwide. Takashi Yamazaki, who directed and handled the effects for the new film, became the first director since Stanley Kubrick, whose 2001: A Space Odyssey won in 1969, to win the award in the category.Godzilla Minus Zero will be the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX. The film will have its world premiere on 26 September at the New York Film Festival and will screen in November as the centerpiece of the Tokyo Film Festival. It is scheduled to arrive in North American theaters on 6 November.
