Jensen Ackles will star in and executive produce Rules of Prey, a new drama series ordered by MGM+. The show adapts the first book in John Sandford’s Prey series and will run for eight episodes in its first season.Ackles will play Lucas Davenport, a former Minneapolis Police Department detective. After leaving the force, he returns to work to investigate a series of murders staged as direct messages to him.The story pits Davenport against a serial killer targeting Minneapolis residents, turning the investigation into a psychological duel. Described as a brilliant and unconventional investigator, Davenport must decipher the killer’s personal code of morality and revenge, as the criminal views their conflict as a game.Filming begins this month in Toronto.Bruce Terris created the series and will serve as showrunner and executive producer. He shares executive producer credits with Ackles, Charles Gogolak, Matt Leipzig, Howard Braunstein, Michael Jaffe, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and John Weber. Sandford will serve as a co-producer.Daniel Sackheim will direct the first two episodes and also serve as an executive producer. His previous credits include series such as Game of Thrones, Jack Ryan, True Detective, Ozark and Better Call Saul.Michael Wright, head of MGM+ worldwide, said Ackles’ leading-man charisma and Terris’ adaptation are a strong fit for the platform. According to Wright, the series will explore the suspense and psychological depth that have defined Sandford’s novels.Rules of Prey will air on MGM+ in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.
