Netflix’s documentary series The One About Matthew Perry offers an intimate and painful portrait of the actor’s life, best known for playing Chandler Bing on “Friends.” Told in three parts, the series follows his decades-long struggle with substance abuse, ending with Perry’s death from a ketamine overdose in fall 2023.

The project, directed by Mary Robertson of “Quiet on Set,” does not feature interviews with Perry’s “Friends” co-stars. It also leaves out figures closely connected to his career, including Hank Azaria, Bradley Whitford and Aaron Sorkin. Instead of relying on celebrity appearances, the series turns to family members, friends, former partners and people who were around the actor during his periods in rehab.

Perry’s younger half-sister, Mia Perry Bowick, a therapist, plays a central role as she describes what it was like to share someone she loved with the public at the height of his fame. Friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman recall meeting Perry and Azaria at the Formosa Cafe in West Hollywood, before they were famous. The series also interviews Jonathan Lynn, director of “The Whole Nine Yards,” as well as others who witnessed the actor’s struggles firsthand.

The series combines these accounts with archival footage, older interviews and excerpts from Perry’s own voice. It revisits already familiar events, including the sepsis-induced coma he suffered in 2018, linked to opioid use, while adding testimony about the effect those crises had on the actor’s personal life.

Perry had spoken publicly about his recovery on several occasions, including in his memoir published in 2022. As a result, The One About Matthew Perry is not focused on explosive revelations. Instead, it brings together known facts and testimony about a man whose talent, humor and success were not enough to overcome a chronic illness.
