Regina Duarte criticized the remake of Vale Tudo, saying she does not recognize the character Raquel Acioli in the latest version of the telenovela. The actress discussed the production in an interview and questioned the changes made to the story developed by Manuela Dias.

“What is this? What character is this? I don’t recognize my character,” Regina Duarte said.

Now 79, the actress starred in the original version of Vale Tudo, which aired in 1988 and was written by Gilberto Braga. In the 2025 storyline, Taís Araujo took on the role of Raquel Acioli, a woman who became wealthy, lost everything and returned to selling sandwiches on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro.

For Regina, the new adaptation changed too many elements of a work recognized as an icon of Brazilian television drama. “I would never do something like that. Take the title of an icon of Brazilian television drama and make the changes that were made,” she said.

The actress also said the telenovela should have been given a different name. According to her, the production might even have been good, although she has not watched it, but it should not have used the title Vale Tudo.

“Don’t call it ‘Vale Tudo.’ The telenovela may have been great, although I haven’t watched it, but it couldn’t be called ‘Vale Tudo,’” she declared.

Aired by TV Globo in 2025, the new version retained the central character from the original story but portrayed Raquel, played by Taís Araujo, on a journey marked by financial success, the loss of her wealth and her return to selling sandwiches on the shores of Rio de Janeiro.
