Netflix has announced a new three-part documentary about the plane crash that inspired Society of the Snow, the film directed by J.A. Bayona. Titled Beyond the Snow, the project brings Bayona and members of the cast on a journey to the site of the tragedy in the Andes.Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in 1972 while carrying a Uruguayan rugby team to Chile. Of the 45 people on board, 16 died in the crash. The remaining 29 passengers became stranded in one of the most hostile and inaccessible regions on Earth and were forced to take extreme measures to survive.The production also follows the fifty years after the crash. It examines what happened to the survivors and to the families of those who lost their lives on the mountain, bringing the real-life experience closer to its depiction in the 2023 film.Society of the Snow received a 90% critics' score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was praised for its performances and direction, and was nominated in two Oscar categories: Best International Feature Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It did not win either award.The story of the crash has already been depicted in books and films, but the new documentary series takes a different approach by bringing part of the Society of the Snow team to the actual crash site. Beyond the Snow premieres Friday, December 18, on Netflix.
