Avengers: Doomsday has already generated $35 million in advance ticket sales, with four months still to go before its release. The performance places the Marvel film among December's biggest box office contenders.

Opening-weekend projections range from $260 million to $300 million. If those estimates hold, Avengers: Doomsday will come close to recent benchmarks set by major superhero releases: Avengers: Endgame opened to $357 million in 2019, a record Spider-Man: Brand New Day surpassed in July with $360 million.

Disney has brought in familiar names in an effort to broaden interest in its most profitable franchise. The Russo brothers return to direct, while Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are back after their characters were given farewells in Avengers: Endgame.

The moment is particularly significant for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has surpassed $2 billion at the global box office, but other recent releases, including The Marvels, Thunderbolts, Captain America: Brave New World and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, fell short of expectations.

Avengers: Doomsday will compete for audiences with Dune: Part Three. The third film in Denis Villeneuve's saga has also opened advance sales and has already reached $10 million, with expectations of topping $100 million in its opening weekend.

Both films arrive in theaters on December 18 and could compete for a new record for the highest-grossing single weekend at the domestic box office.
