Strong Woman Do Bong-soon

Strong Woman Do Bong-soon is a South Korean television drama that aired on JTBC from February 24, to April 15, 2017. Its 16-episode run was directed by Lee Hyung-min and written by Baek Mi-kyeong. Park Bo-young plays Do Bong-soon, a young woman whose family line passes extraordinary physical strength from mother to daughter. The power is not a vague metaphor: Bong-soon can bend metal, throw adults through the air, and accidentally damage property when angered or frightened. She has nevertheless spent years trying to conceal it and avoid using it selfishly. Her dream is to create a video game starring a heroine like herself. The story changes when Ahn Min-hyuk, the young chief executive of gaming company Ainsoft, sees her strength after she confronts gangsters. Park Hyung-sik portrays Min-hyuk, who hires Bong-soon as his bodyguard after receiving threatening messages and attacks. His unconventional arrangement gives her a route into the game industry, while also placing her near a dangerous criminal case. Ji Soo plays In Guk-doo, a police detective and Bong-soon's longtime friend, for whom she has carried an unrequited crush. The resulting romantic triangle is shaped by her history with Guk-doo and Min-hyuk's increasingly direct affection for her. It also unfolds alongside a kidnapping investigation in Seoul's Dobong district. Women are abducted from the area, and the police struggle to identify the offender. Jang Mi-kwan plays Kim Jang-hyun, the serial kidnapper whose crimes become the drama's central threat. Bong-soon's gift makes her valuable to the investigation, but the series repeatedly stresses the moral limits attached to it: her inherited strength can disappear if she uses it for personal gain or to harm an innocent person. Her mother, Hwang Geum-hee, played by Shim Hye-jin, possesses the same power, making the family rule part of the show's mythology rather than a late plot invention. The drama combines workplace comedy, romance, police procedural material, and a thriller involving the kidnappings. Bong-soon's determination to work in game development is reflected in her eventual role at Ainsoft, rather than being treated as a disposable hobby. During its original broadcast, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon became a major ratings success for JTBC. Nielsen Korea reported a nationwide rating of 9.668 percent for its final episode, a figure widely reported as a record for a JTBC drama at that time. Its popularity helped establish Bong-soon as a recognizable superpowered heroine, and Park Bo-young anchors the title role memorably.
