Bloodhounds

Bloodhounds is a South Korean Netflix action drama released on June 9, 2023. Its eight episodes adapt Jung Chan’s webtoon Sanyanggaedeul, while writer-director Kim Joo-hwan reshapes the source around the economic pressure of the COVID-19 period. The series reunites Kim with Woo Do-hwan, whom he directed in the 2019 film The Divine Fury. Woo plays Kim Geon-woo, a disciplined young boxer whose prospects change after his mother becomes entangled with predatory lenders. Lee Sang-yi co-stars as Hong Woo-jin, another boxer who first meets Geon-woo in the ring. Their rivalry quickly becomes a partnership, and the two call themselves “bloodhounds” as they pursue lenders who prey on vulnerable borrowers. The central antagonist is Kim Myeong-gil, played by Park Sung-woong. Myeong-gil presents himself as a businessman, but his operation profits from crushing interest, intimidation, and violence. His conflict with Geon-woo and Woo-jin expands beyond a sports-story premise: the pair enter the orbit of President Choi, portrayed by Heo Joon-ho, an older moneylender who lends without interest to people in desperate circumstances. Choi’s organization gives the young men both protection and a purpose, but also puts them directly in Myeong-gil’s path. Boxing is not merely decorative in Bloodhounds. Geon-woo’s endurance, training, and instinct to absorb punishment shape his choices, while Woo-jin brings a looser, more playful contrast to his friend’s seriousness. Their bond is the show’s emotional anchor amid fights staged in gyms, offices, streets, and loan-shark hideouts. The narrative also follows the human cost of illegal lending through Geon-woo’s mother and other borrowers, connecting personal debt to a wider network of coercion. The cast includes Kim Sae-ron as Kim Hyeon-ju, a figure associated with President Choi’s household, and Choi Si-won as Hong Min-beom, an heir whose dealings intersect with the broader conflict. During production, Kim Sae-ron’s scenes were reduced and the story was revised following her 2022 drunk-driving incident; Netflix released the completed series with her remaining material. This production change is visible in the character’s limited presence rather than being part of the drama’s plot. Bloodhounds received attention for pairing Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi in a demanding buddy dynamic, and for Park Sung-woong’s portrayal of Myeong-gil. Rather than treating debt as background detail, the show makes lending contracts, repayment deadlines, and the threat of compounding interest the machinery that drives its action. Its Korean title, Sanyanggaedeul, translates literally as “Hunting Dogs,” matching its image of fighters tracking a financial predator.
