Edit reference

Oren Peli is an Israeli-American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and former video-game designer whose breakthrough came from making *Paranormal Activity*. Born in Israel, he later moved to the United States and worked in software before turning to filmmaking. His first feature was created with unusually limited resources: Peli wrote, directed, filmed, edited, and produced *Paranormal Activity* largely by himself in his San Diego home. He used a small cast, including Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, and reportedly made the film for approximately $15,000. The deliberately plain domestic setting and handheld footage made the supernatural story feel like private evidence.

The film follows a young couple, Katie and Micah, after Katie says a supernatural presence has followed her since childhood. Micah becomes fascinated with documenting increasingly disturbing nighttime events, while Katie grows frightened by their escalation. After its 2007 premiere at the Slamdance Film Festival, the movie attracted industry attention. Paramount Pictures acquired distribution rights and released it theatrically in 2009, using audience reactions as a major part of its marketing campaign. Made on a microbudget, it became a remarkable commercial success, earning nearly $194 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. The result turned Peli into a prominent figure in the modern found-footage horror cycle and led directly to sequels.

Peli remained involved as a producer on *Paranormal Activity 2*, released in 2010, and on later entries in the franchise. He also developed other horror projects. He wrote and produced *Chernobyl Diaries*, directed by Bradley Parker and released in 2012. The film follows American tourists whose abandoned tour of the Chernobyl area becomes a fight for survival. Peli served as creator and executive producer of the ABC supernatural television series *The River*, which premiered in 2012. Created with Michael R. Perry, the series centers on a missing explorer and the crew searching for him in the Amazon. Peli also wrote and directed *Area 51*, a found-footage science-fiction horror film released in 2015.

Unlike many filmmakers who begin with extensive crews and elaborate sets, Peli has repeatedly emphasized experimentation with format and control over production. His early success also influenced distribution strategies for low-budget genre films, especially through online discussion and event screenings. Although *Paranormal Activity* became a franchise with multiple sequels, Peli’s original contribution remains distinctive because its scale was intimate and its production history was unusually transparent. His career connects independent filmmaking, horror marketing, and television development, while his credits continue to center on suspense built from ordinary everyday spaces.
