Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie, born September 10, 1968, in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, is an English film director, producer, and screenwriter identified with sharply paced crime comedies. His breakthrough, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), followed intersecting stories of debt, stolen antique guns, marijuana, and an ill-fated card game in London. Made for a reported 1.5 million pounds, it became a commercial success, launched Jason Statham's screen career, and gave Ritchie a recognizable pop-culture profile. The film's slang-heavy dialogue, freeze-frames, rapid cutting, and tangled criminal schemes established techniques he developed in Snatch (2000), whose ensemble includes Brad Pitt, Benicio del Toro, and Statham. In Snatch, an 86-carat diamond, an unlicensed boxing match, and competing London gangsters propel the plot, while Pitt plays Irish Traveller boxer Mickey O'Neil. Ritchie then directed the 2002 romantic comedy Swept Away, starring Madonna, whom he married in 2000; the film was poorly received and earned five Golden Raspberry awards. Their marriage also produced a son, Rocco, before the couple divorced in 2008; Ritchie later married model Jacqui Ainsley in 2015.
