Anthony Mackie was born on September 23, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and studied acting at the Juilliard School. His early film roles showed a range that would become a defining feature of his career. In *8 Mile* (2002), he played Papa Doc, the rival rapper whom Eminem’s character faces in the film’s final battle. Two years later, Mackie starred as Perry Williams, a young gay artist researching the Harlem Renaissance, in the independent film *Brother to Brother*. That performance earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead.
Mackie appeared in several prominent dramas during the following decade. He played football player Nate Ruffin in *We Are Marshall* (2006), a film about the aftermath of the 1970 plane crash that killed members of Marshall University’s football team. In *The Hurt Locker* (2008), he portrayed Sergeant J. T. Sanborn, a member of an American bomb-disposal team in Iraq. He also played Tupac Shakur in the 2009 Notorious B.I.G. biopic *Notorious*.
His best-known role began with *Captain America: The Winter Soldier* (2014). Mackie played Sam Wilson, a military veteran who helps Steve Rogers and becomes the winged hero Falcon. He returned as Wilson across Marvel films including *Captain America: Civil War*, *Avengers: Infinity War*, and *Avengers: Endgame*. At the end of *Endgame*, Rogers gives Wilson his shield, setting up the question of whether Sam will take on the Captain America mantle.
That question drives the 2021 Disney+ series *The Falcon and the Winter Soldier*. Alongside Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Mackie’s Wilson confronts new threats while weighing the meaning of the shield, including its history with Isaiah Bradley, a Black super-soldier played by Carl Lumbly. Mackie subsequently led *Captain America: Brave New World* (2025) as Captain America, with Harrison Ford playing President Thaddeus Ross.
Mackie has continued to work outside Marvel. He played a drug dealer named King in *The Hate U Give* (2018) and real-estate entrepreneur Bernard Garrett in *The Banker* (2020), opposite Samuel L. Jackson. He took over the role of Takeshi Kovacs for the second season of Netflix’s *Altered Carbon* and starred as John Doe in the television adaptation of the video game *Twisted Metal*. These projects put him in settings ranging from historical business drama to science fiction and action comedy, while Sam Wilson has remained his most visible screen character.
