About Rite of the Serpent

Rite of the Serpent, Sorcery, designed by Seb McKinnon first released in Sep, 2014 in the set Khans of Tarkir and was printed exactly in 3 different ways.

A deck focused on +1/+1 counters, such as a Golgari or Abzan counters deck, would benefit from including Rite of the Serpent as it provides removal while also potentially generating a token. However, there are more efficient removal options available in black, such as Murder or Fatal Push, which may be better choices for most decks. Rite of the Serpent could see situational play in decks specifically built around +1/+1 counters, but it may not be a staple in most decks due to its high mana cost and conditional token generation.

Rules

09/20/14

If the creature is an illegal target as Rite of the Serpent tries to resolve, Rite of the Serpent won’t resolve and none of its effects will occur. You won’t get a Snake token.

09/20/14

You get the Snake token no matter who controlled the target creature.
