A deck focused on -1/-1 counter synergies, such as a Golgari or Jund -1/-1 counter deck, would benefit from including Nest of Scarabs. This card can generate a significant number of 1/1 Insect tokens when combined with other cards that place -1/-1 counters, providing a valuable source of creature tokens. While there may be more powerful cards for this strategy, such as Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons, Nest of Scarabs can still be a solid inclusion in the right deck and could see play in a casual or budget build looking to capitalize on -1/-1 counter interactions.

If an effect has you put more -1/-1 counters on a creature than it has toughness, you’ll put all of those counters on it and create that many Insects, even if that makes its toughness a negative number.
