A deck that focuses on controlling the board and punishing opponents for targeting your creatures would benefit from using High Priest of Penance. While it can be a useful deterrent against targeted removal, there are more efficient options available such as Fiend Hunter or Banisher Priest, which provide similar effects without requiring damage to be dealt to them. High Priest of Penance could see play in specific metagames where its ability is particularly effective, but overall it may not be a top choice for competitive decks.

High Priest of Penance’s ability triggers once for each instance of damage dealt to it, not once for each 1 damage. The ability will trigger even if High Priest of Penance is dealt lethal damage.
