DC Studios has hired Francis Galluppi to write a new John Constantine film. The project is still in its early stages, and no story details have been released. No cast or release date has been announced.

The news raises a question for fans following Constantine 2: the new film leaves the future of the sequel starring Keanu Reeves unclear. There has been no confirmation that Reeves will be replaced, nor has the sequel been canceled. For now, it is unclear how the two projects are connected.

Reeves played Constantine in the 2005 film directed by Francis Lawrence. In an interview with DC's website, Lawrence said he was closer to making the sequel and explained that the plan was to keep it in the world established by the original film. That was the approach he and Reeves had discussed before news of Galluppi's script emerged.

In the comics, the character first appeared in Swamp Thing stories in 1985 before getting his own series, Hellblazer. Constantine is a British occult expert who relies on his wits to deal with supernatural forces. He was also played by Matt Ryan, whose portrayal began in a television series released in 2014.

Galluppi, director of Evil Dead, is now writing a new film story for the character. The script remains under wraps, with no indication of whether it will continue the 2005 film or who might play Constantine. Those details, along with a release date, have yet to be announced.
