Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow will reprise their roles as Romy and Michele in the sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, set to arrive 30 years after the original film was released. Both also serve as executive producers on Romy & Michele 2.

During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, Sorvino explained why she believes the comedy remains relevant. According to the actress, fans describe the film as a comfort movie, recall how its story helped them feel good about themselves in high school and connect its plot to the affection shared between best friends.

“They relate to the relationship Lisa and I have,” Sorvino said. She also cited audiences' interest in the outfits and dance sequences, as well as the characters' humanity. While she describes Romy and Michele as eccentric figures, the actress believes both have an essence audiences can identify with.

For Sorvino, the pair are a kind of underdog nerd heroine. Beneath their outlandish ideas and odd behavior are characters with genuine feelings, particularly in the way they confront the people who bullied them.

The sequel also reunites members of the cast. Sorvino said she has remained in frequent contact with Kudrow over the years and that the two advocated for the new film to be made. Of her co-star, she said Kudrow is a “great acting partner” and a wonderful person.

Camryn Manheim, Alan Cummings, Janeane Garofalo and Julia Campbell are also returning to the project. Sorvino also mentioned newcomers Rob Huebel and Keegan-Michael Key, praising the pair's humor. The actress said that during the first film, she felt intimidated by Garofalo, much as Romy felt around Heather Mooney, the character Garofalo played.
