A new Harry Potter video brings together standout moments from across the franchise and saves a surprise for its final seconds: a brief teaser for the HBO series. The release kicks off the Back to Hogwarts celebrations, held on September 1, the date on which students return for another school year in the books.

The series' first season premieres on December 25 and adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The story follows Harry Potter, an orphan who discovers his magical heritage after being rescued from his aunt and uncle's home, the Dursleys, by gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. At Hogwarts, he meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, forming the story's central trio.

The production already has news about its second season. Kit Harington, known for Game of Thrones, has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher during Harry's second year at Hogwarts. The character is portrayed as a fame-obsessed wizard, the author of books about magical creatures, a five-time winner of Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award and an expert in memory charms.

Harington also reprises the role in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, released late last year. In the original adaptation, Lockhart was played by Oscar winner Kenneth Branagh.

Nicholas Hoult, who was initially linked to the character, left the cast due to scheduling conflicts. Filming for the second year is expected to begin in the North American fall, before the first season premieres around Christmas. HBO plans to maintain annual releases to reflect the young cast's changing ages.

The series has Francesca Gardiner, of Succession, as its showrunner and Mark Mylod, of Game of Thrones, as its director.
