‘The Odyssey’ has reached an impressive milestone at the U.S. box office. In less than two weeks in theaters, the epic directed by Christopher Nolan surpassed US$330 million in the domestic market, overtaking the total earned by ‘Oppenheimer’ in the country.As a result, the film becomes the third-highest-grossing movie of Nolan’s career in the U.S. Ahead of it are only ‘Batman: The Dark Knight’, with US$534.9 million, and ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’, which reached US$448.1 million.[m]Its North American performance places ‘The Odyssey’ among Christopher Nolan’s biggest successes in the domestic market.[/m] Even so, the production still has a way to go to match the worldwide gross of ‘Oppenheimer’, which ended its theatrical run with US$975.8 million globally.Given the pace of ticket sales, market expectations are that the new feature could surpass that figure and break the US$1 billion barrier. To do so, however, it will have to face competition from ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, the new adventure starring Tom Holland, which arrives in theaters competing for screen space around the world.Now playing in domestic theaters, ‘The Odyssey’ follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon. After the Trojan War, the Greek warrior faces mythical creatures and gods on his journey back home, where Penelope awaits him.The cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton.With a US$250 million budget, the adaptation of Homer’s tale also marks a technical achievement for Nolan: it is his first film shot entirely with 70 mm IMAX cameras.
