The Dark Knight

Released in 2008, The Dark Knight is the second film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and follows Batman’s struggle against the Joker, a criminal mastermind who attacks Gotham City’s institutions and public faith. Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, whose vigilante work has helped create a period in which organized crime appears vulnerable. Gotham’s district attorney, Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart, becomes the city’s public symbol of lawful resistance to crime, while Lieutenant James Gordon, played by Gary Oldman, works with Batman and Dent to prosecute mob figures. The Joker, portrayed by Heath Ledger, arrives without a conventional criminal background or stated personal history. He robs a mob bank, burns a large pile of mob money, and forces Gotham’s criminals into cooperation through fear. His attacks are designed not merely to kill but to test whether Batman, Dent, and ordinary citizens will abandon their moral limits. The Joker repeatedly tells conflicting stories about how he received the scars on his face, reinforcing the film’s refusal to give him a reliable origin story. A central turning point occurs when the Joker captures Rachel Dawes and Harvey Dent and places them in separate warehouses rigged with explosives. Batman attempts to save Rachel, but the Joker has switched the addresses. Rachel dies, while Dent survives with severe burns on one side of his face. In the aftermath, Dent adopts the identity Two-Face and uses a scarred coin to decide whether his victims live or die. His targets include police officers and mobsters whom he holds responsible for Rachel’s death. The film’s climax includes two ferries carrying civilians and prisoners, each given a detonator capable of destroying the other vessel. Neither group activates its device before Batman stops the Joker. Batman then confronts Two-Face, who has taken Gordon’s family hostage. During the confrontation, Batman tackles Dent, who falls to his death. Batman and Gordon decide to conceal Dent’s crimes so that Gotham can preserve Dent’s public image and the anti-crime legislation associated with him. Gordon destroys the Bat-Signal and calls Batman the hero Gotham needs but not the one it can publicly accept. The Dark Knight was a major commercial and critical success. It became the first comic-book film to earn more than $1 billion worldwide during its original theatrical run. Ledger received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor posthumously, making his Joker performance one of the film’s most recognized achievements.
