Insomniac Games has reduced the intensity of the blue trails in Marvel’s Wolverine after players criticized the excessive guidance during exploration. The change arrived with update 1.001.005, released on September 18.The so-called Scent Trails are part of Wolverine’s heightened senses and help point players toward the paths they should follow. Audio Sense also received changes. According to the update notes, the studio reduced the opacity of these elements so they would draw less attention on screen. In practice, the trails still appear during gameplay, but they are now more transparent. The change lessens the feature’s visual impact, although it still does not satisfy players who would prefer to explore the environments without this kind of guidance.Insomniac confirmed that it is considering a broader solution and exploring options to let players turn Wolverine’s senses on or off in a future update. So far, the studio has not said when this option will become available.James Stevenson, Insomniac’s director of community and marketing, explained on social media why implementing a button to disable the feature requires more testing“They’re tied into other systems in some areas, and with so many people playing, we need to be careful during testing so we don’t introduce new bugs or break people’s experience. Thanks for your patience.”- James StevensonThe discussion around the blue trails is part of a broader criticism of excessive guidance in major games. Visual elements and dialogue can constantly indicate where players should go or how to handle a particular situation.God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Forbidden West have faced similar criticism. In Marvel’s Wolverine, the complaints gained traction because the trails are difficult to ignore while exploring. Insomniac is still considering how to offer a way to disable them without affecting other game systems.
