Godzilla Minus Zero has earned a 90% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 136 reviews published so far. The direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One is now playing in Brazilian theaters.

Reviews describe a bigger film, with more destruction and action, while still making room for its characters’ stories. Takashi Yamazaki returns as director, and the balance between spectacle and human drama is a recurring theme in the reviews.

The positive reception is not unanimous. Some critics find Godzilla Minus Zero weaker than its predecessor or say it struggles to bring its multiple storylines together. Others praise its ability to broaden the franchise’s scope without losing sight of the survivors. Reviewers have also highlighted the visual effects and the influence of the postwar setting on the story.

The sequel takes Godzilla to the United States. Yamazaki said a brief sequence in front of the Statue of Liberty matters to one character, and that the Department of Defense, the Navy and the American military play a central role in the film’s themes. As a result, the film includes dialogue in English and Japanese characters who also speak the language.

Despite the change of setting, Yamazaki keeps the Shikishima family in the story. He said the scale of the events surrounding Godzilla calls for a more intimate perspective to make the drama resonate. That balance between the monster’s size and the experience of those facing the destruction runs through much of the response to the new film.
