The End of Oak Street earns early reactions ahead of release

The End of Oak Street, a science-fiction survival film directed by David Robert Mitchell, held its first press screenings through Warner Bros. ahead of its theatrical release on August 14.

Initial reactions posted on social media were favorable toward the film, which stars Anne Hathaway, Ewan McGregor, Maisy Stella and Christian Convery as members of the Platt family. P. J. Byrne and Chris Coy also appear in the cast.

The story begins after a mysterious cosmic event tears Oak Street away from its suburban surroundings and transports the neighborhood to an unknown location. Faced with an unrecognizable world, the Platt family discovers that their survival depends on sticking together.

David Robert Mitchell wrote, directed and produced the film. The filmmaker is known for It Follows, released in 2014, and the 2018 comedy-drama Under the Silver Lake. J.J. Abrams produces the new film alongside Hannah Minghella, Jon Cohen, Matt Jackson and Tommy Harper.

Some reactions describe the film as a fast-paced adventure with nods to popular 1980s movies and dinosaurs. Hathaway and McGregor were also praised in the first impressions shared after the screenings.

Online speculation suggested a possible connection between The End of Oak Street and Abrams' Cloverfield franchise. The producer denied any link, saying the only connection is that Ewan McGregor is the partner of Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the star of 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Full reviews remain under embargo until August 12. The End of Oak Street will open widely in theaters two days later, on August 14.
