David Robert Mitchell

David Robert Mitchell is an American filmmaker best known for writing and directing The Myth of the American Sleepover, It Follows, and Under the Silver Lake. Born in Clawson, Michigan, he grew up in the Detroit metropolitan area, a setting that has remained important to his work. Mitchell studied film at Florida State University, where he made short films before moving into feature filmmaking. His early work established an interest in adolescent uncertainty, social rituals, place, and stories structured around a character’s uneasy movement through a larger community. Mitchell’s first feature, The Myth of the American Sleepover, premiered at the 2010 South by Southwest Film Festival and later screened in Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival. Set during a late-summer night in suburban Detroit, the film follows several teenagers pursuing parties, friendships, crushes, and elusive connections before the school year begins. It does not center on a single conventional plot; instead, it shifts among young characters as they search for people and experiences that may not live up to their expectations. The film introduced a naturalistic style and Detroit-area locations that Mitchell would revisit. His breakthrough came with It Follows, a 2014 supernatural horror film starring Maika Monroe as Jay Height. After a sexual encounter, Jay is pursued by a shape-shifting entity that walks steadily toward its victim and can only be escaped temporarily by passing the curse to someone else. The film was set in an ambiguous, stylized version of suburban Detroit and used a synthesizer score by Disasterpeace. It Follows premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, received wide critical acclaim, and became a major independent-horror success after its 2015 theatrical release. In 2018, Mitchell released Under the Silver Lake, a Los Angeles-set neo-noir mystery starring Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough. Garfield plays Sam, an unemployed man who becomes obsessed with the disappearance of his neighbor Sarah and investigates coded messages, conspiracies, and entertainment-industry mythology. The film premiered in competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Its deliberately labyrinthine narrative, references to Hollywood history, and focus on hidden patterns made it substantially different from the direct menace of It Follows. Across these films, Mitchell has repeatedly worked with recognizable American environments: subdivisions, swimming pools, abandoned spaces, apartment buildings, parties, and city streets. His characters often confront mysteries that are both literal and emotional. Rather than treating Michigan or Los Angeles as anonymous backdrops, he uses their architecture, geography, and cultural associations to shape mood, suspense, and the ways people relate to one another.
