Why is everyone talking about Rooster Fighter?

A rooster, Kaijus, and revenge. Simple as that.

Rooster Fighter premiered on March 17th on Disney+ (Hulu), quickly reaching the number one spot in the Top 10 series with just its first episode. It is not hard to see why: we are talking about an anime where a rooster fights giant monsters created by uncontrolled human emotions.

Adapted from the manga of the same name by Shū Sakuratani, the series follows Keiji, a solitary and extremely powerful rooster who dedicates his life to hunting Kaijus while seeking revenge against the creature responsible for his sister's death.

At first glance, it looks like a prank, or perhaps an absurd idea you would suggest to a friend as a joke. However, Rooster Fighter delivers a very well-executed Shonen structure alongside its comedy and embrace of the surreal.

The Anime and the Manga

The manga, released in 2020, quickly gained attention both in Japan and abroad. Much of this is due to the fascinating contrast between its bizarre premise and its serious execution.

The detailed art, dramatic framing, and action-packed pacing are reminiscent of classic Shonen manga. Yet, at the center of it all, is a rooster.

This is not just any bird; he is a protagonist with the aura of a tragic hero, carrying a sense of purpose and an almost exaggerated sense of justice.

The anime adaptation maintains this same essence from what we have seen so far, utilizing visual impact and a dramatic tone just as effectively as the manga... which, ironically, makes everything even funnier because of the sheer gravity with which it is presented.

Analyzing Rooster Fighter

First Impressions: What is going on here?

You press play without really knowing what to expect.

The very first scene shatters any expectations: a pair of chickens in an... intimate situation. Following that, the protagonist appears strong and confident, essentially the "tough guy" archetype of anime.

Soon after, he is facing gargantuan creatures with strikes that recall Dragon Ball transformations or over-the-top action sequences.

Except he goes cock-a-doodle-do.

It is precisely this kind of thing that defines the "good" kind of absurd found in watching this anime.

Keiji: A Shonen Hero in a Rooster's Body

Keiji follows all the classic elements of genre protagonists:

- He is a loner

- He has a tragic past

- He seeks revenge

- He protects the weak and has a bizarre sense of justice

- He possesses overwhelming power

The difference lies in his form, as he is a rooster who acts like the most serious character in the world.

This disconnect between form and content creates a unique effect. Unlike characters who know they are a joke, Keiji never seems to question his own existence. He is a normal-sized, muscular, and powerful rooster.

That is fine. He is what he is, and for him, that is enough.

Humor

The humor in Rooster Fighter does not come from typical jokes, but rather from the contrast between what we see and how it is treated.

Epic scenes are handled with total earnestness, even when they involve poultry fighting giant monsters using a Kamehameha. The result is a type of comedy that can trigger both laughter and bewilderment.

At certain moments, the humor is almost uncomfortable, which is part of the experience. You either buy into the idea… or you don't.

I recommend watching Rooster Fighter when you are in a good mood, as it makes it easier to embrace the epic and bizarre feeling the anime provides.

Action, Violence, and Aesthetics

Despite the absurd premise, Rooster Fighter delivers genuine action.

The battles are intense, featuring exaggerated moves, grotesque enemies, and everything else a true Shonen should have.

The Kaijus, which arise from emotionally desperate humans, are perfect foes for this bizarre and heightened world, contrasting sharply with the small yet powerful rooster.

Strengths of Rooster Fighter

- Unique and eccentric premise

- Charismatic protagonist

- A mix of action and comedy that works

- Constant surprises from random, bizarre moments

Weaknesses of Rooster Fighter

- The humor might not land for everyone

- It can be "too absurd" at times

- Difficulty in sustaining emotional moments with gravity because everything feels somewhat comical

- The background lore is still a bit vague, though we will see how it develops over time

Anime Similar to Rooster Fighter

Practically any combat and action Shonen with over-the-top powers and comedy could fit here.

One-Punch Man is very similar to Rooster Fighter: it features an unusual character (the bald guy) who is far too powerful for his opponents, mixed with plenty of humor.

The energy blasts and the muscular rooster also bring Dragon Ball to mind, especially the Super Saiyan power-ups.

And, of course, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. This is due to the uncanny nature of super-powered muscular characters striking poses and taking themselves seriously, memorable catchphrases, absurd abilities, and comedy that arises in unexpected moments.

Is Rooster Fighter Worth Watching?

With Rooster Fighter, we get action, violence, plot twists, and a surprisingly rich backstory with our hero seeking vengeance for his fallen sister. It is an anime that, one way or another, grabs and holds our attention because of how absurd it is in every sense and at every moment.

It is strange, the premise is bizarre, and it has a humor that is both awkward and funny due to its eccentricity, along with some violence... but both the manga and the anime deserve a chance.

In fact, I will help you decide if you should watch it or not.

The question is: do you accept the idea of a rooster as an epic hero in a world of random demons?

If the answer is yes, Rooster Fighter might be a great choice for you!
