Jason Voorhees will wear a mask in Crystal Lake, but it will not be the traditional hockey mask that defined the Friday the 13th franchise. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane confirmed that the series will reveal the accessory’s origins and explain why it exists.“There is a mask. It may be a different mask from the one fans are used to, but it won’t be a mask they’ve never seen before. We show the mask’s origin story and the specific reason it exists, and it all connects,” Kane said. The series is a prequel to the franchise and follows a younger version of Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, and her son Jason, portrayed by Callum Vinson. The story takes a dark turn after the boy drowns in the lake while under the supervision of the camp counselors.Pamela is portrayed as a former singer who gave up her career to care for her son, who is described in the story as a child with special needs. The narrative follows both Jason’s childhood and his mother’s emotional journey. The hockey mask, the image most closely associated with the character, was adopted by Jason in the franchise’s third film. In the first season of Crystal Lake, he will not yet wear the version fans know. The cast also includes Nick Cordileone as Ralph, Joy Suprano as Rita, Danielle Kotch as Claudette and Phoenix Parnevik as Barry.
