The second season of Celebrity Traitors premiered to the franchise’s biggest audience ever in the UK. The opening episode, broadcast by the BBC, attracted 8.9 million viewers and surpassed the 9 million mark at its peak.

The 75-minute programme reached almost 55% of everyone watching television at the time. That made its premiere the second-most-watched TV episode in the UK this year, excluding sports broadcasts. The only programme ahead of it was the finale of the civilian version of The Traitors, which aired in January.

The performance also eclipsed the franchise’s previous figures. The first season of Celebrity Traitors, broadcast last year, opened with 3 million fewer viewers, while the premiere of the civilian version shown earlier this year was similarly well short of the new record.

The companion programme Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked followed with 3 million viewers. The second season of Celebrity Traitors will air on Thursdays and Fridays at 20h Greenwich Mean Time throughout next month.

The cast includes Jerry Hall, Richard E. Grant, Myha’la, Bella Ramsey, Maya Jama, Joe Lycett, Miranda Hart, Romesh Ranganathan, Amol Rajan, Hannah Fry and James Blunt. The line-up also features Julie Hesmondhalgh, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Michael Sheen, Ross Kemp, Sharon Rooney, Joanne McNally, King Kenny, Rob Beckett and Sebastian Croft.

Produced by Studio Lambert, the show is regarded as one of the BBC’s biggest entertainment programmes. The fifth season of the civilian version of The Traitors is expected to begin early next year.
