BTS

BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan and Beyond the Scene, is a South Korean group formed by Big Hit Entertainment. The seven members are RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. They debuted on June 13, 2013, with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, led by “No More Dream.” Their early School Trilogy—2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL8,2?, and Skool Luv Affair—addressed school-age pressures, ambition, and youthful relationships. The group’s 2015–16 releases broadened its audience, while The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever became their first Korean album to enter the Billboard 200. Wings, released in 2016, gave BTS its first Billboard 200 top-30 album. Its short-film and music-video imagery drew on themes associated with Hermann Hesse’s Demian, and “Blood Sweat & Tears” became a major hit. BTS reached a new commercial level with Love Yourself: Tear, which became the first album by a Korean act to top the Billboard 200 in 2018. Love Yourself: Answer followed at number one and included “Idol.” In 2018, the group delivered a speech at the United Nations alongside UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited initiative, following launch of the Love Myself campaign with UNICEF to support efforts against violence affecting children and young people. Their 2020 English-language single “Dynamite” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making BTS the first all-South Korean act to top that chart. “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” remix, “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” and “Permission to Dance” also reached number one in the United States. “Life Goes On” was the first predominantly Korean-language song to debut atop the Hot 100. The album Map of the Soul: 7 opened at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2020. In 2022, BTS released the anthology Proof, featuring new songs including “Yet to Come.” That June, members said they would focus more on individual projects while continuing group activities. Jin began South Korean military service in December 2022; the other members subsequently enlisted, as required under South Korean law. In 2023, all seven renewed their contracts with BIGHIT MUSIC. Their catalog combines rap, pop, hip-hop, R&B, and electronic production with frequent member participation in songwriting. RM, Suga, and J-Hope are especially associated with the group’s rap line and writing credits, while the seven-member format remains central to BTS’s recordings, choreography, and global live performances. In 2021, BTS received a Grammy nomination for “Dynamite” in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, the group’s first nomination in a Grammy field. They performed the song during the nationally televised ceremony.
