Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s blue, anthropomorphic video-game hero, introduced in 1991 as the playable star of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Mega Drive and Genesis. In that side-scrolling platformer, he races through six zones, collecting golden Rings, destroying robotic enemies, and confronting Dr. Ivo Robotnik, later widely called Dr. Eggman. Sonic’s defining ability is speed: he can curl into a ball during jumps and roll through enemies and obstacles. The game’s objective is not simply racing; Sonic must free animals imprisoned inside robots and stop Robotnik from using the Chaos Emeralds to conquer the world.
The character was created by Sega’s Sonic Team during development led by programmer Yuji Naka, artist Naoto Ohshima, and designer Hirokazu Yasuhara. Sega conceived Sonic as a mascot to compete with Nintendo’s Mario. His blue color was chosen to match Sega’s logo, while his attitude and speed were intended to project a youthful, energetic identity. Before the game’s release, Sonic appeared in the 1991 arcade racing game Rad Mobile, which helped establish his visual design.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) expanded the formula with larger levels, the Spin Dash, and Miles “Tails” Prower, a two-tailed fox who became Sonic’s recurring companion. Sonic CD (1993) introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, a robotic duplicate created by Eggman, while also using time-traveling versions of its stages. Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles (both 1994) developed the series’ mythology around the Master Emerald and Knuckles, guardian of it.
In 1998, Sonic Adventure brought the character into fully three-dimensional gameplay on the Dreamcast. Its story featured Chaos, an ancient water-based creature empowered by the Chaos Emeralds, and gave Sonic a homing attack. Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) added Shadow the Hedgehog and the darker storyline involving the Space Colony ARK. Later games included Sonic Heroes (2003), Sonic Colors (2010), and Sonic Generations (2011), which celebrated earlier levels by pairing modern and classic versions of Sonic.
Beyond games, Sonic has appeared in animated series, comics, and films. The 2020 movie Sonic the Hedgehog was adapted from Sega’s games and starred Ben Schwartz as Sonic’s voice and Jim Carrey as Robotnik. Its initial character design was redesigned after strong online reaction to the first trailer. The sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, released in 2022, introduced Tails and Knuckles to the film continuity. Across these versions, Sonic remains identifiable through his blue appearance, extraordinary velocity, and repeated opposition to Eggman’s technological schemes.
