Jean-Luc Picard is a Starfleet officer from La Barre, France, where his family maintains a vineyard. He attended Starfleet Academy and received an artificial heart after a fight with Nausicaans left him gravely wounded. Before commanding the USS Enterprise, he captained the USS Stargazer for more than two decades. In a confrontation with a Ferengi vessel, he devised the “Picard Maneuver”: a brief warp-speed jump that made the Stargazer appear to occupy two positions at once. The Stargazer was lost in that encounter, but Picard and his crew survived.

In *Star Trek: The Next Generation*, Picard commands the USS Enterprise-D on missions that bring him into contact with Q, the Romulans, the Cardassians, and the Borg. The Borg abduct and assimilate him as Locutus, using his knowledge of Starfleet during their attack at Wolf 359. After his rescue, he struggles with what they made him do. Other encounters leave different marks. A probe from the long-dead planet Kataan gives him memories of an entire lifetime lived there, along with the ability to play a small flute. During Cardassian captivity, Gul Madred tortures him and demands that he say he sees five lights when there are only four.

Picard’s family history enters the story in *Star Trek Generations*. His brother Robert and nephew René die in a fire at the family vineyard, leaving him to confront the possibility that the Picard family line will end. The Enterprise-D is destroyed in the same film, and Picard later takes command of the Enterprise-E. In *First Contact*, he pursues the Borg into Earth’s past and helps protect Zefram Cochrane’s 2063 warp flight. In *Insurrection*, he opposes a plan to remove the Ba’ku from their homeworld. In *Nemesis*, he faces Shinzon, a clone created by the Romulans; Data dies while saving the Enterprise-E.

*Star Trek: Picard* finds him retired after Starfleet abandons a mission to evacuate Romulans threatened by a supernova. His investigation of Dahj and Soji, synthetic beings connected to Data, draws him back into space. Later, he learns that Jack Crusher, Beverly Crusher’s son, is also his son. With his former Enterprise-D crew, Picard confronts a renewed Borg threat aboard the restored ship. His career spans exploration and war, but these stories repeatedly return to particular consequences of command: the lives lost at Wolf 359, the people he could not save, and the relationships he has kept at a distance.
