Quentin Tarantino surprised audiences at AFI Fest by screening the first 17 minutes of The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The footage was shown during a Q&A and screening of the original film on Friday night at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

At the end of the discussion, Tarantino said he could talk a little about the new film or show its first 17 minutes. The audience began to realize what was about to happen when the director stood up. It was the first time anyone had seen the film.

Brad Pitt returns as Cliff Booth, the stuntman and partner of Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the 2019 film. This time, Tarantino wrote the screenplay, while David Fincher directs. The story moves from 1969 to 1977, in a Los Angeles that no longer needs a stuntman specializing in taking on hippies, but still has problems for someone with Booth's unusual skills to solve.

When he isn't working as a bartender or projectionist, Cliff acts as a kind of fixer for Hollywood figures — including some with less-than-reputable reputations. The cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian.

Netflix is planning an Imax theatrical release for November 25, ahead of the film's arrival on the streaming service on December 23. Fincher said the final cut runs about two and a half hours. The director also said he had to cut 60 pages from Tarantino's screenplay, whose first draft ran to 230 pages; according to Fincher, the material amounted to two films.

During the same conversation, Tarantino discussed The Popinjay Cavalier, his first play, which will star Sacha Baron Cohen. Preview performances begin on February 23, with the show opening on March 18 at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End.
